Peda – Indian Sweet How-to Video


Pedas are a wonderful and delicious mithai (sweets) that are very popular and are often served during Diwali, the festival of lights. Traditionally, they are made from milk that has been cooked and cooked and cooked until it thickens. They have a smooth and silky texture and just melt in your mouth. Since one Peda is never enough, we have a simplified version that is just as tasty and a lot easier to make. Another interesting fact about Pedas…a lot of people distribute sweets (mithai) when a baby is born in the family. If it is boy, Pedas are given out and if it is a girl, it’s usually Burfi.   1. Extremely sweet. Perhaps you should make a suggestion to use unsweetened ingredients and add sugar according to taste. Sorry, but I had to throw it all away.

  2. I made the microwaved version today and I think it came out great. Softer texture than I’m use to as compared to crunchier Guyanese pera. How could I make the texture a bit harder?Use more milk powder, less butter perhaps?
    I tried air drying, refridgeration, oven drying to no avail.Suggestion?

    1. Hi Tee,

      Based on our experience with this recipe, it firms up perfectly when cooled. We are not sure what the texture of Guyanese pera is so cannot comment on that. Maybe the power of your microwave is lower than ours and the mixture needs to be cooked for a little longer.

    I often check recipes on your website and also try some. Each time all the measurements and tips are really helpful.
    This time I found the easiest recipe for peda and tried it immediately. But I find that the peda consistency is still mushy after 4 minutes in microwave. I thought may be after rolling and keeping in the fridge it will stay. But it was difficult to roll properly and after removing from the fridge it starts spreading a little. Like flattening. I have taken the same measuments. Can u help me with that to get it in proper shape? I hope it will not taste chewy. I made for Diwali and can not taste it before that.

      Sorry for the late response…

      Sometimes, the power level of different microwaves is different. You may have needed to cook the mixture for a little longer.

      I tried this peda too. But mine is a little mushy. Like the uncooked fudge. I wonder where I went wrong. I microaved for 4 minutes. Should I microwave it more or add more milk powder? I made it for Diwali and can not taste it before that. I will appreciate if u can guide me.

    I’m so happy that they look so easy to make. I plan on making them for three upcoming parties this weekend.

    My question is: will they stay fresh for a few days in the refrigerator, as they await delivery to the various parties I’m attending?

  8. Instant Nonfat Dry Milk (Milk Powder)is what is written on the package and is available at any grocery store in the coffee/creamer aisle. You can buy Carnation brand or any local store brand as well.
