Preparing rice using this method is an excellent way of enjoying the taste of rice without the added worry of starch. An added bonus…rice comes out soft and fluffy, not lumpy and hard.
Ingredients:
Rice – 2 cups
Water – 8 cups
Salt – to taste (optional)
Method:
- Wash Rice well and soak it in water for about ½ hour.
- Bring 8 cups of water to a boil in a covered stockpot.
- Drain the water from the soaked Rice and carefully pour the rice into the boiling water.
- Once the water comes back to a boil, set your timer for 10 mins. and let the rice cook. Stir once in-between to make sure the rice is cooking evenly.
- In a colander, drain out the water from the Rice.
- Let it stand for a couple of minutes to make sure all the water drains out.
- Pour the rice gently into a platter and serve.
- Serves 5-6.
Tips:
- 2 cups of uncooked rice makes about 10 cups of cooked Rice (unpacked).
- We have used Basmati but you can use your choice of rice and cook it the same way – the cooking time may vary a little.

HI Sara,
You definitely add a bay leaf as well as whole cloves and a cinnamon stick for additional flavor. It will not change the color of the rice. Btw, mint leaves are also excellent.

Hi Anuradha,
Cooking brown rice in the pressure cooker is the same as white rice. One part rice, two parts water, a bit of salt (optional), pressure cook for one whistle.

Hi Hetal/Anuja
here’s a wonderful tip to share..that make rice shiny and beautiful like we eat in restaurant….add 1 tsp of lime juice at the time we add rice in water…it really makes a lot of difference…..
I prefer to add jeera and 1 tsp oil at the time we add rice in water..and when we strain rice..jeera wont strain with water…

Hi Pooja,
I had heard that tip long ago but somehow never tried it out. I will definitely try it out now. Does it also work when we make rice without straining the water? Thanks for sharing!

Hi Shani,
If you are using the boiling method in this video, you use a lot more water and then drain it off. If you are not using the draining method, then your ratios will work fine.

What is so special about basmati rice ? i’ve tried it, and it doesnt really feel different from any ordinary long grain rice. Except at 4 times the price.
At least jasmin rice actually has incredible aroma, even uncooked. Compared to jasmin, basmati seemed quite bland to me.

Hi Karry,
Believe it or not, but Basmati rice does actually have a wonderful aroma when cooked. The “special” thing about it is its characteristic “unsticky” quality which makes it perfect for pulaos and biryanis.

I have recently been trying to make naan. Watched your video today and it really cleared up some things for me. I have made quite a lot of breads in the past, but flatbreads such as naan handle differently. Thanks for the video and recipe I can’t wait to try it out.
Also, you cleared up basmati rice for me. I only rinsed it not soaked. Do you have a recipe for whole cumin seeds with the rice?

Hi Theresa,
We have a video for Cumin Flavored Basmati Rice (Jeera Rice). Please bear in mind that it is an old video so the quality may not be that great. Here it is: http://showmethecurry.com/rice-dishes/jeera-rice.html
