Grilled Vegetarian Sandwhich, Street Food Video from Mumbai

Mumbai is known for a lot of the things and the top two would be Street Foods and Bollywood! In a recent trip to the beautiful city, I tried so many great street foods. Here is a look at the famous Sandwich at Anand Stall, outside Mithibai College. This Grilled Vegetarian Sandwich was loaded with vegetables, brimming with flavors and the street-side ambiance just added to the experience. We skipped the Onions and the Bell Peppers and what we ordered was just half a sandwich for just about Rs.35! How could we go wrong with that? So simple, delicious and so easy to make at home.

  1. Hello:
I was home alone this afternoon and got hungry quick. Dear wife and kids were out. I got out the bread, one lonelly boiled potato, a fresh onion, a tomato, cheese, ketchup.. OMG I had everything I’d every need. I sliced and layered it ALL on 2+2 slices of bread. Of course I spend 10 minutes looking for the sandwich maker grill. but Volia… when it call came together…crisp, sizzling with flavors and melting cheese. and NOT a single drop of oil. Thank you very much. BURPPPPPPPP!!

  5. QUESTION

    Hi

Thank you for this video. Can you please tell me what kind of cheese can we use in the US for this sandwitch ?

I am from bombay and I miss this sandwitch ):):

    pls reply

    thanks
    Sheetal

    1. I would try Monterey Jack or Mozzarella (not the fancy fresh Mozzarella but the kind that you have to grate). You may want to try a combination of Jack and Mozzarella. Hope this helps.

  6. hi

i tried this sandwich at home and was instant hit, my daughter who is not vegetarian loved it and ask me to make it every week end. It was very surprising for her that the guy making the sandwich wasn’t wearing any gloves. Thanks for sharing this video.

  7. great fan of yours. growing up in islamabad used to love eating cucumber sandwiches. definitely will try to make this version.

  8. Thanks, Anuja. You and Hetal have a flair for keeping ‘show me the curry’ as alive as when it was in your together days. Great entrepreneurship!

May I please request a written version of the street food recipes so that I can have print-outs for filing and easy future reference?

  10. Street food sandwich I liked very much. What is important is that you have, while talking with the vendor extracted what are the ingredients.

  13. hey Anuja…. 🙂
i m too from Mumbai and visit this sandwich shop often just to eat their sandwich…they make the best sandwiches i have ever eaten 🙂 just like u i was noting all ingredients and his method to make sandwich 😀 😛 and for your information when i asked him what masala is he putting,he said me its “sandwich masala” and not “chat masala”.

  14. I love that the bread is triangular! I wish I could see the molds they are baked in. Guessing they are like pain de mie/Pullman loaf pans with a sliding lid.

I must try chat masala on grilled cheese now!

    1. Hi Robin,

They were not very forthcoming about the triangle bread – either they did not know or they did not want to share…but, yes, my guess is the same as yours. The pan has to have a lid, else it would be puffed (from 1 side)…all guesses…

      1. Hi guys. I am originally from Himachal Pradesh in India. The big bread was specially made for sandwiches because it holds the filling well. I think ‘Bambaia’s triangula’ bread is baked on the same principle

Anuja, I think it’s the immunity that is responsible for our digestion. Wish we all have that strong immune system to enjoy our authentic street food.
If you get pani puri with seven different water do not miss it, it’s yuuuuuummmm.
Hope Hetal visits you soon and you make a new episode adding spice to our lives from ‘home’ soon.

        Regards
        Vandana

  15. Great to see you in Mumbai enjoying street food, Anuja.

Wishing you and the family all the best.

    Greetings from Berlin!

    Helena

    1. Thanks Helena, I miss Hetal as well 🙁 but, we are trying to make the best of the situation and we think we aren’t doing too bad 😉
Thank you for your wishes 🙂

  18. Very cool video and Anuja you are very brave for eating street food. Yes, it’s usually more delicious but Westerners get sick from street food.

    1. I am an American who has eaten street food around the world for the last fifty years. To my knowledge it has never caused me any problem.
