We love to call this the ‘jhatt-patt’ rice. ‘Jhatt-Patt’ means quick! What a fabulous name for this wonderful left-over Masala Rice dish. It is amazing what a little masala (spices) can do to freshen up the leftovers. So finish off the leftovers and get a great dish out of it, what a brilliant idea!
Prep Time: 5 min
Cook Time: 7 min
Ingredients:
Cooked Rice (White or Brown) – 3 Cups
Oil – 1 tbsp
Mustard Seeds – 1/2 tsp
Asafoetida/Hing – 1/8 tsp
Turmeric Powder – 1/4 tsp
Peanuts – 3 tbsp
Curry Leaves – sprig
Green Chillies – to taste
Channa Masala – 2 tsp or to taste
Salt – to taste
Cilantro – for garnishing
Method:
1. In a pan, heat some Oil.
2. Once hot, add in some Mustard Seeds and allow them to pop.
3. Add in a pinch of Asafoetida, a little Turmeric Powder and some Peanuts, in that order.
4. Allow the Peanuts to cook and turn reddish-gold in color.
5. Meanwhile, heat the leftover Rice in the microwave to get it to room temperature.
6. Add Spices (Channa Masala, Salt) to the Rice in a bowl and mix well and keep aside.
7. Once the Peanuts are cooked, add in Curry Leaves and finely chopped Green Chillies.
8. Immediately after that, add in the spiced Rice.
9. Toss and mix well and allow the Rice to heat all the way through.
10. Garnish with fresh Cilantro and serve hot.

Hi Sri,
We’ve never tried this recipe with brown rice, but it should work. The only difference might be the brown rice’s ability to hold all of the masalas. Maybe you could sprinkle some water on the rice before adding the masalas so that they stick. Also, the texture may be different.

I cant thank you enough for all the wonderful recipes you have put up…I have been trying quite a few of them and they have all turned out awesome. My confidence in cooking has gone up and I have to attribute this to both of you. Please keep up this good work.
This recipe is so innovative and a nice way to not use left over rice.
Thanks again.

Hi Hetal and Anuja,
Your recipes are amazing. my friend referred me to this site. i love it. i like the way you give step by step instruction.
one question in this recipe. I am allergic to chana. is there any other masala that i can use?
secondly, i don’t take eggs. do you have any other french toast recipe without the egg?
Thanks,
Puja

Hi Puja,
Chana masala doesn’t really have chana in it. It is a masala used in chole or chana recipes. Be sure to read the ingredients list anyway
just in case. Basically, you can use any masalas that you have (preferably something tangy). The bottom line being that you want to jazz up the plain rice.
Regarding the French Toast… unfortunately, we do not have a way of making it without the eggs. Sorry.

Hi,
When I first saw this recipe, I thought-oh well, just another boring masala rice.It did not interest me enough even though I have not tried chana masala with rice. Last night I had some leftover rice and thought will give this recipe a try. I tweaked it a little bit and was pleasantly surprised. Great recipe.

Thanks Hetal,
I always suspected this, but since my allergic reactions are so bad, never really got down to picking up a box and reading the ingredients.
. thanks for that. you confirmed it.
I tried your methi malai matar, turned out amazing. you guys are great!
Though the mind blowing recipes were Tangy Paneer and Masala Mushrooms. My family loved simply loved it.
Keep putting in more. I love the way you guys explain it step by step.
For more flavoured days ahead,
cheers,
Puja

This looks really yummy! I was reading through your comments and was wondering if you had ever made french toast with yogurt or soy yogurt instead of eggs. It works really good, you thin it out the same as you would an egg and it browns nice too. Maybe it would work for your french toast.
Thanks for the great videos

Hi Sarah,
We have never used yogurt to replace eggs in French toast. Doesn’t the thinned out yogurt make the bread soggy?

Hi Brian,
Yes, the plain rice can be cooked in a rice cooker, but you would have to do the seasoning on the stove.
