Instant coffee doesn’t have to be a teaspoon of instant coffee powder mixed with milk or water. Try this interesting method to make a superior cup of instant coffee.
Ingredients:
Instant Coffee – 1 tsp per serving
Milk – 3/4 cup
Sugar – to taste
Water – few drops or as needed
Method:
1. In a coffee cup or mug, add Instant Coffee and Sugar.
2. Add few drops of water at a time to make the coffee/sugar mixture into a thick paste.
3. With a spoon, keep whipping the mixture until it becomes light and frothy (it should cling to the spoon).
4. Add very hot milk and mix through.
5. Transfer the coffee from one cup to another (at some height) until bubbles form.
6. Serve immediately.

To add to this, if you like lots of froth, frother (2 bucks at ikea) – mostly used for beating egg does a great job at creating that extra layer of froth.

Mmmm the coffee looks delicious. You can actually use a fork to make it frothy quicker..since it allows more air to mix in.

Hey Anuja & Hetal,
This is exactly the way I make it!
It comes out super good. Brings back fond memeries of my hostel time during engineering. Many of us would stay awake during exams & one would beat the coffee for all of us.and would keep beating it,till the sugar almost dissolved & the colour of the coffee became very light
Thanks for bringing back those fond memories!! I just can’t appreciate u enough for the pure joys u have brought into our lives. Whenever my husband wants to cook something special or somebody else asks me the secret of my cooking.. I just tell them go to showmethecurry.com . You’ll get everything you need.
Cheers!

It stays very hot…all the air trapped in the foam on the top keeps the heat from escaping, & the coffee under the foam stays super hot…as hot as the water &/or milk you’ve used to make it.

H&A,
Can I just use a froth maker to whip up the instant coffee quickly instead of using all that muscle power? Will it turn out the same?
Also, as much as I would love to serve my guests coffee this way, I think it will take too much time. A froth maker would be great! Do let me know.
Thanks for your lovely recipes, please ignore the people who tell you otherwise!

For folks who have suggested using a frother, I thought I would give you some context of where this style of coffee making came from. I can sooooo relate it to it. About 20 years ago, while we lived in the hostel studying Engg, with only a mug, spoon, sugar and instant coffee avaialble, this was the way to take instant coffee to the next level! There were no forthers around then, nor was there Starbucks for that matter
.
Sure brings back some really good memories!
Thank you!!

Hi Ujjaval,
The best method to make cold coffee is to use a blender. That way, you can add ice and crush it along with the milk and coffee.

July 16th, 2011 at 3:28 pm
We used to do this in a bowl (we were usually makingfor at least 10-15 peope), adding water by teaspoons as we went along, it was a breeze. The foam was nor air, it wouls be solid rich thick & creamy. No need to pour from one cup to another (which really cools the coffee). I used to use it as a filing in sandwich cakes…lovely flavor…

This is exactly how my FIL made coffee for me the first time he visited us. He was so excited to share his way of making “special” coffee, as he called it! So this was a trip down memory lane for me as well. I am the only coffee drinker in the family and am a true coffee lover. But I really can do without the foam and milk:)I did not mention it to him though, after all I was too appreciative that he made me coffee:) Thanks for bringing all that back to me today.

Hello Hetal and Anuja,
That’s the way I make coffee too and everybody loves it.A few suggestions if you want to make your work easy. You can use a fork instead of a spoon to speed up the process. Also if you have an electric whisk, it makes this coffee making super easy and lot of fun.
Thanks,

This method is rather intriguing, though. I wonder if I could buy a container of instant coffee to try this without anyone seeing me?

If you are beating instant coffee powder for like 4-5 cups then you can use hand beater to beat it for you in couple of minutes. I usually take 5 teaspoons coffee powder, add 10 tsp sugar to it, some water and then beat it using hand mixer. You can refrigerate the left over mix – it doesn’t lose its body.

Hello H&A, a big biggggg fan of yours BTW……just visited India in April and came back recently this past July 4th weekend…..and i don’t know if u gals will believe me at all but i must say that during my stay there my sis was making this coffee for me like, literally, every single day back in India!!!!!! Can u believe that????? Even though it was scorching hot i never lived a day w/o it!!!! I loved it loved it sooo much…..
BTW my question is can we use splenda or stevia instead of sugar? I’m on low cal diet so trying to skip the sugar these days….thanks.

What a coincidence! This style of coffee making a really popular in India. We personally have not tried stevia or splenda for this application but I know splenda comes in a granulated form that is supposed to work just like sugar.

# how to make a chocolate egg cream
Chill a tall 8 oz. glass in the freezer or the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before making the chocolate egg cream soda. Use very cold milk and very cold seltzer water too.
# 2
Measure 1 oz. of chocolate syrup and pour it into the bottom of the chilled glass right before you are ready to serve it.
# 3
Measure 1 oz of cold whole milk. Pour this into the chilled glass on top of the chocolate. It will settle on top of the chocolate so you will need to stir it to mix the two ingredients.
# 4
Fill the rest of the glass with seltzer water. Stir vigorously with a long spoon. A foamy “head” will form at the top when you pour in the seltzer. This makes the chocolate egg cream soda look and taste authentic.
# 5
Serve right away on a hot day. This refreshing concoction is a great way to introduce today’s children to what people used to enjoy. Tell stories of the old time ice cream shop.
