Chocolate Chip and Walnut Cookies

For Mother’s Day, kids love to “surprise” moms with homemade treats from the heart. Here is an easy cookie recipe for your kids to try out and impress Mom on her special day. Older kids can do it “all by themselves” and little ones can spend precious “mommy time” bonding. If you don’t have kids, don’t worry…its one scrumptious cookie that you just have to try!

Prep Time: 10 mins plus 30 mins chilling time
Bake Time: 13 – 15 mins
Makes: 20-24 cookies

All-Purpose Flour – 2 cups
Baking Soda – 1/2 tsp
Salt – 1/4 tsp
Quick Oats (uncooked) – 1 cup
Butter – 2 sticks (1 cup ), softened
Sugar – 1/2 cup
Brown sugar – 3/4 cup
Eggs – 2 large
Vanilla – 1 tsp
Lemon Juice – 1 tsp
Chocolate Chips – 2 cups (approx 12 oz)
Walnuts – 1 cup, chopped

Method:

1. In a mixing bowl, combine Flour, Oats, Baking Soda and Salt.
2. In a separate mixing bowl, cream together softened Butter, Sugar and Brown Sugar with a hand mixer (approx 2 minutes).
3. Add one Egg and beat into the mixture.
4. Add second Egg and continue to beat until incorporated.
5. Add Vanilla and Lemon Juice and mix well.
6. Add dry ingredients into the wet ingredients, a little at a time while mixing.
7. Fold in Chocolate Chips and Walnuts.
8. Chill cookie dough in the refrigerator for approx 30 minutes.
9. Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
10. Line baking tray with parchment paper or lightly grease.

12. Bake 13 – 15 minutes until cookies appear golden brown.
13. Cool cookies on the tray for 5 minutes, then transfer them to a cooling rack and cool completely.
14. Store in an air-tight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks.

  1. Hi ladies, i’m so sorry and shocked by the comments of some people! very strange! I wonder: what do they want to achieve? dear dear Hetal and Anuja, words are too short to say that you both are rolemodels to us! except for you’re cookinginstruction, I enjoy the qualities that you show us in ur video’s. smart, honest, clear, respectful and a lot of love for cooking, eating, family and more.

dear Hetal and dear Anuja and to all the mothers over the world: happy mothersday

    big hug,

    Fauzia
    ( rotterdam, holland)

    1. Hi Amy,

You would have to use a little more baking powder than soda because the powder contains baking soda plus other ingredients.

  2. hi hetal

After one person complaining that you do not reply to the comments you have answered each and every comment, good to see that….you are just awesome. Thaks for your food processor information I too want to buy one and will definitely keep all these points in mind before buying. Thanks one again hetal. Please show us how to make good chicken biryanis (like hyderbadi dum biryani, pakki biryani, nawabi biryani etc.). Happy mothers day.

    1. Hi Samu,

1 cup of all purpose flour (maida) = 140 grams approx

1 cup sifted all purpose flour (maida) = 115 grams approx

  3. Happy mothers day to both of you. Just love all your receipe. I found egg substitute at local whole food store, its like powder so can I use that for this receipe. Also diabetes run in my family so can u guys let us know little bit about Glycemic Indix of Indian food please.

    1. Hi Purvi,

We have not personally tried any store bought egg substitutes. Many of them will probably work for this recipe, it’s just that we have not tried them to give an accurate account.

  4. I am appalled at some of the personal comments here. What a shame! Such a thoughtful episode for Mother’s Day turned into this. Hetal and Anuja you both are doing a great job. Your distinctive personalities are the ones that make this site unique. While I can not take the hurt away, I wish you both a very Happy Mother’s Day!

  5. Awesome!! I have tried all most all of the veg recipes from you both….My cooking was never this good…
I made some of the Indian sweets and fruit cake and sent it to my Mom and my relatives in India.. well..they thought the sweets were store bought… and my mom was on cloud 9 LOL..:)

Thank you and Happy Mother’s Day both…:)

  6. hetal,

i love the way you talk. even though you are been here from long time, doing great job on receipes. anuja is okay. i dont like her much honestly. she showes attitude in the show. i hope she doesnt read it!

    1. Can’t believe people are responding this way on the website! I actually like Anuja a lot and Hetal too. Anjua has very fun loving personality and I really enjoy watching her. Sometimes when I am stressed, I just watch some of their videos for relaxation. Many times watching their video is like bonding time with my daughter.
Both of them are just gr8 together. Please stop making such comments online.

    2. By complimenting one of us and criticizing the other only hurts this website. We are a team and have put in long, hard hours (equally) to make SMTC what it is today.

We request everyone to please stop the nonsense and focus on the delicious recipe that our beautiful children have presented to you all.

      1. Hi Hetal n Anuja…..wonderful work as always…..love the show…love you two and now the kids are super duper adorable. I was wondering if you can us any kind of blocking/filtering feature that can stop these sort of stupid comments.
Nonetheless….I can’t thank you enough for all you do…..it’s because of your recipes I totally impressed my in-laws when they visited us from India πŸ™‚

    3. Anuja and Hetal, don’t listen to people like this. That’s a rude comment and is false as well. Hetal & Anuja are different people with different personalities, and their individual natures shine through on the show. I think you two make a great pair and your skill in front of the camera has only grown with time. I’ve watched your videos for 2+ years now and they’re always getting more professional and just generally better!

  7. Hi Anuja & Hetal,

Thanks for this wonderful recipe. I tried this recipe and the cookies turned out perfect.
This is summer time now so Please tell me how to make Fruit Cream. My husband likes the Fruit Cream very much but I don’t know how to make it.

    Thanks.

    Chanchal

    1. Hi Kajal,

You can try to substitute with flaxseed powder (2 Tbsp) mixed with water (6 Tbsp) as someone else has mentioned. We have not tried it in this recipe to be able to give you an accurate account.

  8. I am a dedicated viewer of this website and have tried many many recipes out of it. Practically all recipes have turned out extremely well living upto the expectations of the featured video. Please keep up the good work.

  9. Hi H&A di,

My ques. may sound out of context but can u advise me about some good brand of food processors,or may be some points to keep in mind before buying..coz i want to buy one.and i want to make a wise decision and not regret later.plz do help.

    Thanks

    1. Hi Shalu,

Some things to consider when buying a food processor:

      1. The size – if you have a big family or entertain a lot, try to get one that has a larger capacity.

      2. The attachments – many people use a food processor only to chop and don’t need all the fancy blades. If you plan to use it for more than chopping (ex: shredding, kneading dough, etc), look for one with many attachments.

      3. The power of the motor – bigger wattage is always better in this case so you are able to handle large loads without having to worry about the motor going out.

      4. The price – this is the final consideration as you will see the crazy range of prices.

Once you have one particular model in mind, read online reviews for potential problems.

  10. Hi Ladies,

Great recipe, can’t wait to try it even though it has crazy amount of butter. But than butter makes everything better, even it it’s for a short while. lol.

I love the idea of kids presenting kid friendly recipes. It should be moticator for other parents to get their kids involved in some form of cooking. Please don’t get discouraged by anyone making negative remarks about you or your children. I think it very immature and rude to complement ones’ child(ren) and not complement the other that are also in the video!!! It’s almost like you’re making a negative comment by not saying anything about the other child.

This show wouldn’t be the same if both Hetal and Anuja had the same personality. However the are equally nice and share the responsibility of making every video.

Happy Mother’s Day to both of you and all the moms out there!

    1. Thanks for your continued support Pinal and always being in our corner :).

It seems like a lot of butter but this recipe makes about 24 cookies so it is not that much per cookie….and the taste is just heaven! Enjoy!

    2. Very true. Both H & A have unique personalities and it will be boring if they both had same personalities. I think they make a good and fun team!

  11. Hi H&A,thank u so much for the recipe….just made the cookies,just made a slight change;i removed 2tbsp of maida and added2thsp of cocoa…the cookies r yummy,chocolaty and simple .

  12. Is there any difference between Instant oats and quick oats?? If so which is better to use for baking? And yes among others I am also waiting for eggless cookies because my mom doesn’t eat eggs.

Also, I want to say it’s very good that you guys make videos with kids. It’s a great way to involve kids and seems like they actually had fun doing this, thus maybe I should try cooking with my kids as well.

Happy Mother’s day to both of you ladies.

    1. Thanks Ami! We mistakenly assumed that both were the same and said “instant”, however after some research, we found that quick oats need to be cooked whereas instant oats just need hot water. We used Quick Oats for this recipe. Thanks for asking a great question! πŸ™‚

      1. If you have used Quick Oats, can you please change it on your ingredient list? It still says Instant Oats. It’s confusing.

  13. Hi Hetal and Anuja…
ur kids r really very sweet like cookies…i like ur all recepes..nd all r really very gud…plz post recepe for undhiyu..Gujarati Undhiyu..
    Waiting for ur reply..Thank you…

  14. Hi hetal and anuja..
You guys are awesome..you amaze me with all your wonderful recipes and explanations..!!
Liked the kids video..both look cute πŸ™‚ Great recipe..!!

  15. Love the kids’ videos! Adorable and fun to watch. Please do include your kids when you can.

I’ve become a big fan of your shows!

  16. hi anuja and hetal,
    nice video ………..
    both are very cute.
especially the anujas kid i love him.
he is like me ,me too. i always stole some choco chips from the recipe.
    hetals daughter looking cute.
instead of dark choco chips,i use white choco chips.
    thanks……….

    1. Hi Sivaranjani,

Thanks! We think white chocolate chips would be fabulous as well in this recipe. Please let us know how they come out :).

  17. Nice video! Instead of using too much butter, you can use canola oil and a little bit of butter. That way you can still get the butter flavor without getting too much saturated fat. Anyway, you’re kids are very fun to watch.

  18. Hi Hetal & Anuja,

    Great recipe! πŸ™‚

One tip I’d like to offer- try putting a couple of slices of bread in the container to maintain the softness of the cookies.

    Keep up the great work.

    1. Thanks for the tip Celina! We’ve heard of it but never tried it. How long are you able to keep the bread there without it spoiling?

      1. Well, if I can keep hands out of the box long enough, I could tell you! πŸ™‚ The longest I have ever tried it is for 2 days. But it does work well. The bread is hard when you take it out.

  19. Hi hetal & Anuja,
I have been following ur recipes for over a year now more than 90% of the times they turn out to be excellent.and sometimes, they are absolutely divine. People are being really rude to u. I am writing to tell u,not to be disheartened by these people. I really appreciate the effort you are putting in and I will always be indebted to u for the wonderful things I have learnt to prepare coz of u. U both rock!!!!

    1. i completely agree with Nupur, i think only jealous people can write like this. kids are kids, both are so confident and cute. Keep it up, best luck always.

      with luv,
      Sej

      1. I don’t think anyone is jealous. They may not think how their comments will be viewed or they may not be such polished writers.

        1. Well, even if they’re not polished writers, they sure know to be rude. Because, most of us think the comments are not appropriate.
I was so happy to see the kids present such a wonderful recipe, with so much confidence. They are as good as their parents.

  20. So this is becoming a family-show now? I always prefer hetal-Anuja hosting the show themselves.Well, this is just my opinion . feel free to ignore πŸ™‚
Of late, lot of changes to this wonderful community that I have been a part of for 3 years now, Sigh!!!!

    1. We always value our viewers opinions (as long as they voice them in a civilized, respectable manner). This has always been a family show! Throwing in a funny video or something different once in a while breaks the monotony…don’t you think?

      1. Yes, I agree. It is nice but as I said, I still miss you both on every show and prefer you two hosting it :-). Again, this is my opinion but obviously you get to call the shots πŸ™‚

  21. Hetal and Anuja, your kids are awesome. They did a wonderful job- very few kids would be able to present a video like this. I absolutely loved this video. Hetal, your daughter is so cute and well spoken, and Anuja, your son is intelligent and has a cute, mischievous look:)
Please let me know if there is a substitute for egg is this recipe. Thanks a bunch!

    1. Hi Chandni,

We have not tried this recipe without eggs or with a substitute. We have some eggless cookie recipes coming up.

  22. too much butter in this recipe…….its sure to goto “mommy’s” hips and what not. I prefer to make cookies without ANY butter and they taste devine.

    1. That will happen if mom gets to eat them all πŸ˜€ You saw the kids had already started eating. Once in a while eating butter is not a big deal.

  23. hi priya,

how do you chat to anuja and hetal? pls let me know coz i have lot of queries to discuss with hetal/anuja. i had put some questions in previous videos but they did not reply.

    thanks

  24. Thanks Anuja for ur prompt reply. I know that they are your family, I only meant to say that you always over do a bit in all of your videos and sideline hetal most of the time. Please let her speak and do something. Also try to be more natural rather than being artificial. This show really rocks. I have just put my view points no hard feelings pls. Happy mothers day to both of you.

    1. I think by nature Anuja is more cheerful and Hetal seems a bit formal. They are being themselves and a great combination. I enjoy watching them both.

      1. I think Abby your comments are hurtful. Everyone is different and unique, please think before you publicly judge anyone especially on this wonderful website. They are great team and doing excellent job, please try to appreciate their work instead of judging their personalities.

  25. OMG….anuja and hetal di..ur kiddos have grown up! Both look very very cute! Lots of cuddles and hugges from my behalf for these cutie pies!
Btw, that day, when i chatted with anuja di..i wanted to ask her to post a cookie recipe. I desperately wanted one since my dh is preferring all snacks homemade due to his health issues.
    Thanks a lot.

  26. hi,

I am still waiting for the reply but you guys never reply. when sombody criticizes you reply very promptly. Every video people have lots of queries and they put up their queries but without any response. There are people who log on to ur site day and night even after knowing that there won’t be any new video and you don’t seem to respect ur viewers. Anuja had asked Abby to be respectful and sensitive but what r u doing? It is understood that u guys are doing a great job and it takes lot of pain, time, patience and money to put up one video but all this is worth at the end of the day for both parties (u and viewers) so pls answer the queries.

    1. Hi Abby,

We’re sorry we missed your earlier question. We try our best to address all questions but unfortunately, we miss some. Anuja responded to a disrespectful comment because it was an effort to stop further non-sense on our website…immediately. Sometimes it is midnight by the time we get a chance to answer viewer questions so hopefully you’ll be patient.

Regarding your question: Oats play an important part in this cookie recipe for their chewy characteristic. You will not get the right texture if you simply add more flour. Also, in baking, if you change one ingredient, you may have to adjust others as well.

    2. OMG ! whoever you are ‘anonymous’. Take this site as a favor and not as their duty …who on earth r u to write like this !! go and get some culture and behavioral sense !

Hetal: You shouldn’t be responding to such comments at all. they seem to be taking the resources for granted !!

      1. I agree. That comment was completely uncalled for. They do us all a great service by posting these incredible videos and it is not their responsibility to log on every hour and see if you have some question! This is a hobby, not their job and you certainly aren’t paying them anything for their services. Calm down and stop posting rude comments. Of course they respect their viewers!

  27. hi hetal/anuja,

If we do not have oats at home is there any substitute? or can we add an extra cup of maida. Please reply coz i want to try this right now.

  28. Great recipe, you must be proud mothers, to have such great successors of SMTC, Anuja your son is full of energy great!

  29. PS: Can’t wait till my kid is old enough to take over the kitchen! Those cookies look wonderful!!! πŸ™‚

    Happy mother’s day!

  30. Amazing kids….making a yummy recipe and that naughty boy enjoying choco chips……the way my son does everytime we bake something together..all kids r the same!
I tried crepes today morning for b’fast, came out great, even my picky eater had one before school.Plz add some more kid friendly recipes.

    Thanks

  31. hi hetal/Anuja,

Nice video, hetal your daughter is just like you very sober and down to earth, whereas Anuja’s son is exactly like her doing lot of nakres on the video. Anyways thanks for this lovely recipe and keep up your good work

      1. I think that the comment was not meant as a negative but as a positive- seeems to be a little misunderstanding!!!

        1. Anon,

It may not be negative..but that’s not what one should write about children. Remember, it could be your own …

      2. all the controversy going for the boy who made the video absolutely interesting with his stage presence…i had no intention of making cookies at all but these kids made me watch it again n again…SMTC cant find a better way to post the mother’s day video…mommy don’t get surprised if this kid pick theater as his future career…

  32. Hetal and Anuja..
The kids are great..mini version of both of you..and btw my name is Sejal tooo…Yay we both are awesomist.. πŸ˜‰

    Love
    SM

  33. Hi Hetal and Anuja..

Great Receipe. Can you tell me what can i substitute eggs with? WE dont eat eggs and i would be very happy to see an alternative for making cookies at home.

    Thanks as always..
    SM

    1. Hi SM,

We have not experimented with an eggless version of this recipe but we do have some eggless cookie recipes on the way.

    1. Hi Lalitha,

The problem with baking versus cooking is that baking is a science and the recipe is a formula. Any changes to the recipe (even slight ones) may adversely affect the outcome. Flaxseed powder works great in some instances but the less you have to use, the better because it has a grainy look and feel. There are many things you can substitute for the eggs: applesauce, banana, a mixture of oil, water and baking soda, etc. Unfortunately, it is not an easy substitute and the entire recipe may need to be re-adjusted.

We try to offer many eggless recipes to our viewers who are pure vegetarian. Some recipes work really well with eggs and we show them for the benefit of everyone that can use them. We are always asked “what can we substitute for eggs” but sadly, it is not an easy answer without having to show 2 different recipes.

      1. I have tried a similar recipe with flaxseed meal and came out very well! A tip to keep the cookies soft in dry places like colorado… stick a slice of fresh bread in the container the moistness in the bread keeps the cookies soft and doesnt allow them to harden πŸ™‚

  34. Sigh! Such cute kids! If you are going to put up more such videos, I might just end up liking them more than the recipes, tee hee! πŸ˜€

  35. Such a cute video..!!

i bought a dark coloured brown sugar is that fine? and the vanilla ur using is vanilla essence or something else..?

  36. hi juniors,
thanks for giving this receipie….my son realy love this.. luks so yummy.u guys r just enjoying in kitchen with ur favourite dishes.
