Parathewali Gali, Chandni Chowk (Old Delhi) – Street Foods Of India

Parathewali Gali – literally means – a narrow lane where they have Parathas! And that is just what it is – a narrow alley where there are a few shops that are known to have some very famous parathas.

So going into the history, Parathewali Gali is in the heart of Chandini Chowk, the oldest and the busiest markets in India. The “parathewala” shops have been around for five or six generations and what is more amazing is the variety of flavors they carry. Pause the video and take a look, and get ready to be amazed.

    Stop teasing us by trying all that yummy food. Just kidding. I love all theses authentic food. If you are there in old Delhi then do try chaat. It’s known for that too..

    1. Is that recommended? Freshly fried food I think is okay because the heat kills the bugs, but I have to resist the temptation of the chaat or pain puri stall because of the water used in the chutney…..

  2. It seems my comments have irked atleast one person here. I wasn’t trying to critize Anuja in any way for enjoying the food. I have enjoyed street food on many occasions and certainly enjoy pakoras, if not puris. In fact, I have been taught that if I do have to eat street food, it is always better to go for something that is freshly fried and served than for something that has been sitting around.

    I found the greasiness of the parathas sickening and I said so. But then, I don’t enjoy fried food in general very much. So maybe, it’s just me. I am sure Anuja had no problem with my point of view.

  6. I was intrigued to learn about a whole gali known for its parathas. However, the greasiness of the parathas just sickened me. I would not have been able to enjoy that paratha, no matter how tasty. But of course, to each his/her own…..

    1. Do you enjoy poori or pakoda? Does that sicken you?!!! Yes, even I found it surprising but no need to be so negative on food that so many people eat.

      We understand that street foods can sometimes be unhygienic and unhealthy and that is why it is not an everyday food but like you say, to each their own πŸ™‚

    3. I think the two replies misinterpreted what nkalil was saying. The fact that it was FRIED was her concern.

      Some people, myself included, have digestive difficulty with fatty foods like fried foods. Eating something with this much oil on/in it, for me, would require a cup of plain vegetables or 2 slices of plain bread in order to “line” my stomach and enable me to avoid severe pain. It appears she meant to say that she is not able to tolerate the high level of oil soaked up by such a soft preparation during the cooking process.

      I love parathas…I just have to be mindful when I eat them with a meal to balance out the oil with less rich dishes.
