Thanks a lot for the tips. But there is onemore tip is just wash the onion under tap water, which helps to wash the chemical which causes tears.
This helps to cut the onion easily without crying.

I heard that if you chew gum while chopping onions, it will make you cry less. Haven’t tried it yet:)

Hi,
Nice tip. I did not know that onions & potato do not get along well with each other. However once I saw your tip I immediately separated them. Have a question though, Sometimes when I make cookies, the recipe uses egg wash to coat the baked cookies & then coat them with sugar. Since I don’t use eggs wanted to know what is a good substitute for egg wash? BTW i make eggless cookies (use flax seed instead ,also learn’t that tip from one of your tip video’s).
Thanks for your time & response in advance,
Jayashree

Hi Jayashree,
“Substitute for egg wash – Simply use oil, dairy/nondairy milk, dairy/nondairy butter. ¼ cup of light corn syrup thinned with very hot water can also be used for glazing.”

Great tip- I had no idea about the onions and potatoes- no wonder they keep on “growing those little plant things”.
One more thing that works great for those of us living in colder climes–use the naturally cold air in your garage!—store stuff in the garage during winter, things last longer! I have also used the snow to:
1. Cool stuff fast ( think -pressure cooker, palak waiting to be pureed etc.)
2. Cool drinks before a party.
Love your show!

Hi Gagan,
Super cool idea. I had gone to Ottawa a few years ago at Christmas time and my cousins, kept all the food outside and brought it into the fridge to defrost

Thanks.

Wow…. i did not know this…i avoided cooking anything that involved Onions as I could not bare the smell and fumes.
Do you know by freezing, will the smell of Onions also reduce when cooking?
Thank you both. And i will also try the goggles
i cant believe it but it actually is better than crying…

Hi Meghna,
The Onions are put in the freezer for 15-20 minutes and that does not change the flavor.

I’m one of those who has stored onions and potatoes together forever, although they’re in plastic bags. Can you tell me how far apart they need to be to be free of the risks of over-ripening (if they’re in plastic bags)? Is keeping them in separate bins in the same cabinet ok?
Thanks!

Cut onions into 2 halves and then soak in water for five minutes before chopping fine and say bye to tears
