Healthy Sweet Potato Chaat

Sweet potatoes, though called potatoes, are only a distant relative of regular potatoes. They are commonly marketed as “yams” in North America to differentiate them from the firmer white potato even though they belong to a completely different family than the actual “yam” (native to Africa and Asia). When compared to other vegetables in terms of fiber and nutrition, the sweet potato ranked highest in complex carbohydrates, dietary fiber, beta carotene (a vitamin A equivalent nutrient), vitamin C, and vitamin B6. With that said, take the sweet potato to a flavor high point with the super easy and healthy Sweet Potato Chaat recipe. Serve it as an appetizer or a side salad — the perfect Indian spin on nature’s perfect vegetable.

    1. Hi Krupa and Ghanshyam Mama!

Hope you all are doing great! It makes me feel so proud to see support from family. Thanks a bunch! Love to Anila Mami and Rupa and family. 🙂

  1. Hi Hetal and Anuja!

I made this last night for our non-traditional Thanksgiving dinner. I was so excited to find this recipe since it had two essential Thanksgiving ingredients – sweet potato and cranberry. I was not disappointed – it was sooo good!

Thanks to Anuja’s sister for the wonderful recipe! Such a lovely combination of flavors.

You two are great – keep cooking and inspiring! 🙂

  2. How come you guys always end up surprising me? I never explored delicacy of yams before seeing your video. But, after watching it, I immediately bought yams and tried it today. (Btw, I couldn’t find good oranges, so just made plain yams salad without cucumber and orange heee heeeee )

You brought back all memories of india….. In Ahmedabad, we used to get steamed sakarriyu on thelas. I used to love it, but didn’t know they were actually yams of US. Thanks a ton for this healthy lunch 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

  3. Hi hetal and anuja,

Honestly, my first thought of this recipe was “what a weird combination of ingredients” sweet potato?walnuts?? cucumber??? mint????

Tried it this evening, very skeptically made just a little and the taste was so amazing, that i made a second round all over again.

One of the most unique (note the change from weird:) combination i have ever come across and very very yummy!

Bless you guys and your sister too. She must be one hellava cook:)

    1. Hi Vidhya,

Thanks for the honest feedback 🙂 Glad you enjoyed it.

My sister is an amazing cook and she will be touched by the blessings, will pass on the message to her 🙂

  4. Hi,

Thanks for the recipe for this wonderful recipe.
I tried it and it was great.

I had a small question. Would it possible to freeze indian food like fish curry or chicken curry.

    Thanks
    Simi

    1. Hi Simi,

Most Chicken Curry dishes freeze well. Always make sure you freeze in an airtight container to avoid freezer burns. When defrosting, defrost well before heating so the chicken pieces do not break up.

As for Fish Curries, fish is a very delicate. You can freeze but you have to be very careful while re-heating.

  5. Hello, Hetal and Anuja and all other friends out here. I have got a big time question, so if you guys could help me out with it. I have my exams after 2 days and my exam time is 8:30 am, so i am worried about breakfast, as i cannot really start my day without breakfast. But also it would be difficult to stuggle by making it so early ( got to leave home by 7 for exam). If you guys could suggest me some nice tips for breakfast taking care of my exams( so that i dont feel sluggish), i would be greatful. Thanks in advance

    1. Nirja, To stay alert all morning, include protein in your breakfast. Grab some yogurt, ham, cheese, lentil cake or hard boiled agg made the night before. If you have time, make a smoothie with yogurt and fruit. And then there is always that staple – an omelette – yum!

    2. Hi Nirja,

That is a great question and thanks Renu for piping in! It always helps to get different views. Every one is so different, for me a heavier breakfast (heavier than what I am used to) would make me very sluggish 🙁 but that’s me!

Having proteins is a very good idea and avoid too much sugar (specially the kinds that have chocolate)…they give the brain a rush and we all know that the faster the rush the faster the fall. You want to stay alert.
I would also suggest you sleep early and wake up early so you are well rested and not rushed in the morning.

Some suggestions are: Oats/Oatmeal, Whole Wheat Bagels and cream cheese or toast with peanut butter.
      Good Luck on your exam!

    3. Steel cut oatmeal with blue berries and some walnuts are supposed to be very healthy breakfast(according to Dr.Oz 🙂

Make sure you have some carbs along with protein in the morning. Drink plenty of water to keep you well hydrated (but not too much so you don’t have to take breaks during the exam :->)) I have noticed that the days I do not drink enough water or proper food, I have no energy left by the evening.

  6. hi

i hav a question for hetal and anuja and all viewers….

i have Cuisinart food processor…. while i chop onions in that it tastes bitter… y is that happen? do u have any solution for that?

    thanks in advance

    1. Hi N,

We know that raw Onions contain a substance in their cell walls that if damaged, release bitterness. Unfortunately, there is no solution except not to grind so finely.
We have had this problem happen to us when we used a blender but never in a food-processor.

  7. please post recipe of bean veggie burger
if not video – atleast the recipe

I think you should put all recipes you have and work on the videos later. atleast this way we have the recipes

    1. We only put up recipes and videos of dishes that we are absolutely certain of. We are still experimenting with the Black Beak Burger recipe and cannot put it up till be are happy with it.

  8. Hi, Please post the recipe for “thandai”…its a summer drink made especially durning holi in the state of rajasthan….I have seen so many different recipes of the same drink online but want to know the authentic way of making thandai …thanks!!

  9. Hi Hetal and Anuja,

I luv ur website…really helpful for me and my cooking . I just wanted to ask a question : What is broil mode in the oven i didnt find any in mine. Could you help newbies like me with this.
    Thank you in advance.

    1. Hi Appu,

‘Bake’ is when the oven has an even temperature throughout but ‘Broil’ is an feature in the oven that gives intense heat from one or two sides. So if you keep the dish close to the element and put the oven on ‘broil’ it will cook (color) the dish from that one side and and not all the way through.
Hope that makes sense, please ask if you have any more questions 🙂

  10. Amazing combination ! Thanks to both of you and your sister !!
Its late at night otherwise I would have run to the store to get the sweet potatoes right NOW !

    1. Hi Deepti,
I will pass on the message to my sister 🙂 But anytime I ask her for a recipe, she says “after you make it, bless me”! So I suggest you do the same 😉

  12. Hi Hetal & Anuja,

The actual yam in India is also called “ratalu” right.. May be in Gujarati… I was wondering, do we get that in US?

      1. sweet potato is ‘shakkariyu’ – also called yam – easily available in stores like walmart , krogers etc… look for them in the potato and root veggies section… they are long in shape and if you scrape the skin you will see the orange inside..!

    1. Hi Sakina,

Ratalu (purple yam) is available in some places like Hawaii. I have seen the white variety of sweet potato at Indian grocery stores, but haven’t really noticed the purple variety.

  13. hi hetal anuja……
