Peda

Pedas are a wonderful and delicious mithai (sweets) that are very popular and are often served during Diwali. Traditionally, it is made with milk that is cooked and cooked and cooked…till it thickens. It has a smooth and silky texture and it just melts in the mouth. One Peda will never be enough…so here we have a simplified version that is just as tasty and a lot easier to make. Another interesting fact about Pedas – a lot of people distribute sweets (mithai) anytime there is a baby born….so if it is boy, its Pedas and if it is a girl, it’s usually Burfi. But it doesn’t have to be Diwali or you don’t have a birth in the family to enjoy this mithai…..enjoy them anytime with this quick and easy recipe. We have to thank Jyotika Zaver for sharing this fantastic recipe with us.

Makes 40 bite size pedas (approx little bigger than the size of a quarter)

Ingredients:

Instant Dry Milk (Milk Powder) – 2 cups (150gm)
Sweetened Condensed Milk – 1, 14oz can (396gm)
Unsalted Butter – 1, 4oz stick (113gm)

Method:

  1. In a microwave safe dish, melt the butter.
  2. Add in the rest of the ingredients and mix well.
  3. Cook in the microwave for 3 minutes, stirring very well after every minute.
  4. After the 3 minutes, mix well again and leave aside for the mixture to cool down enough to handle.
  5. Once the mixture has cooled down, grease your hands and make balls.
  6. Gently press the balls and flatten them to shape…round and flat.
  7. Decorate them with colored sugar, almonds, cashews, pistachios or raisins.
  8. Let the pedas set and cool down.
  9. For a pretty presentation, place them in baking cups and serve.

Tips:

  1. Powder some cardamom seeds and add to the mixture for additional flavor.
  2. Roll out the peda mixture and cut with cookie cutter for some fun shapes.
  3. For best results, store in the refrigerator but serve at room temperature.

  1. Hi H&A,

On a different note, could you please post any unconventional recipe of drumstick…I’m only aware of using it in sambar and no other way. Infact there are many such Indian veggies which most of us can cook only in a certain way. It would be great if you could put your creative spin on those.

Thanks again for your huge contribution to the world of gastronomy. You’re adding so much more than a pinch of spice to my life 🙂

  2. Hi H &A,

I’m a big fan of yours and have tried many of them and met with success. But peda for me was a definite miss. It tasted a lot like infants’ cerelac or at best like white milk chocolate and had a pasty chewy texture…looking at the enormous amount of positive comment I wonder if I got anything wrong. The smell of milk powder was overwhelming in the final product. I don’t come from a peda making family but have eaten a lot of pedals at the siddhivniayak temple in Mumbai.. These tasted nothing like those 🙁

  3. Hi. I really love your recipes, but I’ve found that your microwave ones just don’t cook. I’ve got my microwave set on high and is 1100 watts too.

I’ve tried both khandvi and peda.

For peda, it actually takes 6 minutes in my microwave. I searched and found this other link on youtube because after trying your recipe and the texture after 3 minutes looked too runny, I wanted to see if anyone showed what the final texture should look like so I would be able to tell if the peda was ready. Here’s the link:

  4. HI Hetal & Anuja,
i just tried making these pedas according to your recipe and only different thing i did was added little less condensed milk since my family likes less sweet, the only problem was after it cooled, it was still little chewy from inside, is there anything i can do, so it doesn’t get chewy next time.

    Thanks

    1. Hi kpatel,

The nature of these pedas is that they are a bit chewy compared the regular ones. I guess a sacrifice to saving so much time. 🙂

  5. Hello hetal and anuja i tried making the pedas but at the end cracks kept appearing i dont know if its the difference in measurements as i live in england and your mixture in the video looked more than what i had measured it said 150 grms and then you say two cups and my measuring cup is a standard uk measuring cup what we use over here so in the end i did use two cups as my mixture didnt look right compared to your standards dont know what went wrong and also looked in a lot of supermarkets no one sells carnation non fat over here so had to buy semi skimmed with only 6% fat dont know if that was the problem thanks for all the great recipes love your videos

    1. Hi Pamela,

Our standard US measuring cups are 8 fluid ounces. We have never tried using anything but non-fat milk powder so that may be the cause of the cracks. You can try using less milk powder so that the pedas are smooth.

  6. Today, I went to the beach with my children. I found a sea
shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She put the shell to her ear and screamed.
There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear.
She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is completely off topic but
    I had to tell someone!

  7. Hi, i made pedas n kaju katli simultaneously just in half an hr when my little one was asleep. I cant beleive it. Both turned out so good. thnks so so soooooooo much.

  8. Hi Hetal and anuja,
U guys are doing a great job.I love all your food recipe and make it a point to pick atleast one when i have guest at home.
I have a question on these pedas : how long they last without refrigerating them.i have to make like 40 pieces for tom noon and would prefer to make it them tonight.would you suggest me to place them tonight in the refrigerator and keep it out for 10mts before serving or they last out fresh till tom noon.
Would apppreciate if the reply was quick thanx a tonns…Waiting for more yumilious recipes espcially desserts 😛

    1. Hi Nidhi,

Sorry for the late response… You can definitely store them in the fridge and keep them out for about 30 mins to bring them to room temp. Any milk product should not be kept at room temp for very long.

  9. but now, the other times, it becomes very oily and chewy, it doesnt come together, ive lost hope, please help, (sorry there’s a problem with my net connctiin)

  10. , the first time, it came out less chewy than the other times,i remember i heated the mixture a couple of times before microwaving on high heat

  11. everytime I make this peda it comes out chewy, I realised today, when I measured the two cups in grams, 2 cups = 150g. and the excess milk powder accounts for the chewiness. waste of time !

  12. Hi,

I had tried it but it din’t turn out good.
It was extremely dry and cld not roll them. What cld be the reason plz. suggest.

  13. Hi,

I used Mawa (milk powder) instead of non-fat dry milk powder and the mixture came out very buttery with melted butter literally oozing out of the peda mixture. Is it because of Mawa? I have used this recipe couple of times before and it didnt then and the pedas came out pretty well. Please advise. Thanks.

    1. Hi Veena,

The pedas are a little oily as you roll them, but they dry up pretty soon. We don’t get full fat milk powder in American grocery stores here so we’ve never tried it.

  14. Hello, I made this for my boyfriend who is staying miles away from me! and he absolutely loved the pedas, asked me to send more next time 😉 Thank you very much for this recipe 🙂 Im going to make these a second time today and a third next week 😉

  15. Dear Anuja and Hetal,

Thanks for the easiest mithai recipe ever. They tasted delicious, yet a little too chewy and buttery. I was wondering if the peda mixture is supposed to turn out this buttery, or if it’s just something on my part. I used Nido, carnation condensed milk and tilamook butter. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

  16. Hi Hetal & Anuja

Thanks for the recipe it turned out nice but i had a problem. i didn’t have a microwave, do you know an alternative way to cook it. I instead used a double boiler using steam, place saucepan on top of another pan with water, boil the water and mix the milk powder and other things on the saucepan.

it tasted as i liked it to but it was a chewy consistency like toffee not hard but sticky gets stuck in your teeth i would like a more crumbly like consistency of burfy.

    thanks

  17. Hi Hetal n Anuja

thx ladies for the really tasty peda recipe. But mine turned out to be greasy while rolling into balls plus it had cracks at the edges. Did accordingly to the recipe not sure why these happened. please help thx……:)

  18. Thanks for this quick and tasty recipe. When I tried this a couple of weeks back, it didn’t come out very well. It was chewy. I guess it was something to do with the milk powder, as I could feel the milk powder taste so strongly. Today I tried with Carnation Dry milk power and it came out really really well. Thanks again!

  19. Hi Hetal and Anuja

Really intersting receipe and i luv pedas, can u pls guide me how do i make these pedas on the stove as i avoid using microwave.

Your quick reply on the same will be highly appreciated as i would like to make this for Holi (Gaura Purnima)

    Thanks a ton in advance,

    Rgds

    1. Hi Chetna,

Unfortunately, we have not tried this recipe on the stove so cannot give you exact instructions. Sorry.

  20. Hi Hetal and Anuja,
I want to make this sweet delicacy on my husband’s bday…Can you pls tell me what type of measuring cups u use? is it pyrex brand (shaped like a mug)??
btw i tried ur recipe 4 gulabjamun n it was instant hit, no wonder 🙂 my husband loved it..thanks 🙂

  21. Hi,

Is it possible to add unsweetened cocoa powder to this and make it as chocolate pedas? If so, when and how much should be added ?

    Thanks,
    Anusha

    1. Hi Anusha,

Yes, you can add cocoa powder right at the beginning when mixing all other ingredients. We have not actually tried it in this recipe so don’t have an exact measure. Cocoa powder is usually pretty intense so a little will go a long way.

  22. hi
i am big fan of your recipes guys. you guys are doing great job. i have a quick question how can i make kesar pedas i have to make for bhagwan prasad so i was thinking to make kesar can u please help me how to make it.

    thanks
    rani

    1. Hi Rani,

You could take a big pinch of kesar and grind it with about 1 tsp of sugar to make a fine powder. Add this to the mixture and mix well. Follow all other steps.

    1. Hi Sam,

We only get the non-fat version here so have not tried it with full fat powder. Sorry. If you decide to try it, I’d do a small batch first.

    1. Hi Rob,

We have never tried this type of cookie presser but the peda mixture is a little dense…probably a little more dense than cookie dough. If you have the presser already, I guess it doesn’t hurt to try it.

  23. hey there…..
i’ just 16 n’ my first recipe turned out to be soooo cool…
guess wht???? my mom is so impressed….
    thanks guys…

  24. Thank you for such a great recipe. I have a little problem though. My friend gave me this recipe but forgot to mention the butter. I made the pedas without the butter but they are quite soft. Is there any way to salvage them? Also I had unsweetend evaporated milk so I added a little sugar, could that be the problem? Please help.

      1. Thanks Hetal, I will keep it in mind the next time.

To salvage my pedas I crumbled them and added some butter to them and heated the mixture for 2 mins mixing it after one minute. Once the mixture cooled down I made the pedas again. They were quite good if not great. Next time I will use the condensed milk to make sure they are great.

  25. Hi,
I tried this with my wife having gone out of town and the consistency is too pasty and still like peanut butter even after sitting outside the microwave for ten minutes. I’m pretty sure I followed the recipe right. Can you think of what might be wrong? I did microwave for an extra minute but did not get it to be any more solid..
    Sd- A distraught husband

    1. Hi Satish,

Sorry to hear that :(. Did you use a standard measuring cup? Some people use tea cups or the cup that comes with rice cookers thinking that it is one cup. The only other thing is the power of your microwave. If it is considerably less, it would take a lot longer to cook.

  26. Hi is there a reason for putting butter in your Peda recipe, is it there for binding or to give it a more creamy rich flavour?

  27. Hi,
I got the instant dry milk from walmart but inspite of stirring it well the granules seem to stay…it doesn’t get much smooth even after I microwave it for 3 minutes and keep stirring in between each minute. Is this supposed to happen?

    1. Hi Seth,

The granules usually go away after a while. You may want to run the milk powder thru a blender before using it next time (if they are really large).

  28. Hi Hetal & Anuja

    How are you?

I live in Londn and since I have seen your website I have made so many disg
Hes and all of thrm was perfect first time round. I tried to make chocolate barfi and that was my first dish which did not turn out nice. Its becsuse i used semi skimmed milk poeder and it was my mistake. But that is neares we csn get in London. In Uk we cannot buy Kroger non fat instant milk powder so please help me and adbice me if you know as to which brand milk powder i can use as diwali is near and my family really loves chocolate barfi. I have seen another mske of milk powder on amazon website and the brand name is BARRY FARM non instant no fat milk powder. Is this the correct milk powder then i will purchase from amazonbut i am very determine to make chocolate barfi.
I will soon be visiting usa and will definatly purchade all the ingrediem
Nts thay i cannot get in london but inthe mean gime i need to fimd the milk powder asap plesse help.

    1. Hi Minu,

I’m so sorry for the late reply… Unfortunately, we are not familiar with the brands available in the UK so we cannot guide you. Here in the US, we have used Kroger brand as well as Carnation brand non-fat milk dry milk. The Barry Farm one sounds like it would be the right one.

      1. Hi Hetal,
I wanted to tell you that I loved your recipe. I always come look for your recipes first. I even tried coconut burfi and its awesome. Decorated with melted chocolate checkered pattern. (I used sweetened shredded coconut partly which I grinder it up to the required texture, didn’t make a difference in taste, followed exact procedure).
I made both the recipes for my 3 yr old girl’s birthday at school as they don’t do cakes as its messy and unhealthy. (Hopefully these are not too unhealthy 😉 ). So coming to the point, I used Non-instant dry milk by organic valley and its awesome. I added less than a tbsp of maida but it didn’t really need it. I rolled and cut it up into shapes. Its super cute, decorated with m&ms and chocolate chips.
It is a bit chewy though. Putting it in the fridge overnight helps a bit.
I mentioned it in this thread because it mentions non-instant milk and hopefully it will help someone like me!!

  29. Hi Anuja and Hetal,
I just wanted to ask whether unsalted butter, which is used in other recepies also,is it the same what is called cocoa butter in India?I use that for making chocolates.I tried many of your recipes, they were just superb!Thank you very much.

  30. Hello Hetal & Anuja
Great work. I enjoy trying your recipes and nothing is failed so far and also I got great compliments from family & friends. Easy to make,Fool proof, good measurements !!
    Hats off!! you guys

I request you to put Kesar Mewa Rolls receipe in your website

Thanks a lot and keep going ladies!!

  31. hi
    i loved your recipe
i kept the peda in the microwawe for the second minute when i removed it i saw that the mixture became fried and its bottom had became black in colour culdu plzz tell me hw i can correct this?

    1. Hi Sasha,

Wow! We’ve never had the mixture burn on us like that. Not sure how to correct it…maybe just scrape away the burnt part? The burnt flavor may already have seeped into the rest of the mixture.

  32. hi dis is raj i tried to make peda but i was not able to make it.. it remains so sticky what should i do with this now???

    1. Hi Raj,

Sorry for the late response. If the mixture is too sticky, you may need to cook it more. The watts on your microwave may be less than ours.

  33. hi i recently found out about ur wonderful site with yummy recipes…. i have tried making the pedas but unfortunately the dough became little hard and chewy…. pls help

  34. Thanks for your yummy recipes. Please could you make a video about how to make e’clairs. Thank you .

  35. Hi Hetal/Anuja,

How many days before the party can I prepare the pedas.
Will it stay fresh on the party night.

    Thank You.

    1. Hi Rao,

Pedas can be made several days ahead (2-3) and will still remain fresh for your party. Be sure to store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Also, leave them out for an hour or so before serving for best flavor.

      1. Which aisle do we get it in ? What do they call it here ? It is certainly not called milk powder since when asked so they wonder what on earth it is !

  36. Just made tis today and they turned out creamily yummy!!! Thanks for such simple but yummylicious sweet!

  37. Hi,I want to try this recipe,But I got milk-mawa powder from Indian store..Is it ok to use this instead of milk powder…
