Khatti Daal

Here is a simple and delicious recipe for Khatti Daal submitted by one of our viewers, Gizzel Dsouza from India. The term “Khatti” means tangy or sour and this recipe uses tamarind to get the tart flavor. Masoor daal is another one of the few daals (beans) which does not require soaking so it goes from the stove to the table in little time. Try this recipe today!

  1. Hello ladies..

This recipe looks suuuper easy..can’t wait to give it a try..but there is 1 thing..i have never used a pressure cooker..and I’m scared actually to use it..Would it work the regular way..like just covering the pot and thatÒ€ℒs it?

And if yes how long does it take to cook?

    Thanx

    1. Hi Afra,

This is one of the daals that can be easily cooked on the stove in a pot. We have not cooked daal in a pot in a very long time (we prefer pressure cookers πŸ™‚ ), but it will probably take about 30 to 40 minutes. You may also have to keep adding additional water as needed while it cooks.

  2. Hi Ladies,

I have been using your recipes for sometime now and love all of them. My husband is wanting for me to make more dhal, but I have trouble getting it cooked thru – I do not have a pressure cooker so i have to do it on standard stove – do you have any tips for me? It seems like I have to keep adding water because it cooks down, but then the flavors are minimzed. Any help cooking it without pressure cooker would be greatly appreciated!

    1. Hi Michele,

When cooking daal without a pressure cooker, avoid adding salt until the daal is completely cooked. Also, wait to add the spices and seasoning until the end. This way, you can add to your taste without the flavors getting watered down. I would recommend investing in a pressure cooker (especially if you plan on making more Indian food). It is such a worthwhile gadget for your kitchen in terms of time saved and healthier cooking.

  3. Thanks for this recipe! I made it tonight without the curry leaves, which I could not find, and using dried New Mexico chiles. It was sooo good! I also made chapatis to go with it. They’re harder to do, but came out pretty well on the second attempt. Your site is great!

  4. Hi Guys,
I am newly married and I have never ever made dal before and I was so anxious about my first attempt, but I saw your video (twice) πŸ™‚ and ventured to make khatti dal. I added a chopped onion to the pressure cooker but followed the rest of the recipe and it came out great. My mom and in laws cannot believe I made it and want the recipe too :)Your videos are simple and so easy to follow and I’ll be trying out more in the days to come and will keep checking in regularly for more yummy creations πŸ™‚

  5. Hi guys,
I made Masoor dal following the same recipe as Gujarati dal on ur website.Just subsituted Toor dal with Masoor dal..It was yummy !!thanks

  6. No..I’ve tried both..I know its not supposed to be very sweet but just a hint of sugar..else it wouldnt be khati meethi..It looked ok once I cooked it but didnt taste ok..Could be the garlic..I dont know..

    1. I dont understand why you are looking for “Khatti Meethi” daal when they are clearly saying that they showing recipe for JUST “Khatti” Daal.

They are not saying anything about “Meeth” here, so whats your confusion lady?

  7. Hi,
I agree there’s something amiss with this recipe.Fistly there is no meetha in it unless the tamarind paste is sweet. So it should be mentioned whether to use a sweet one or add sugar in some other form. The ginger garlic is not a problem but in the type Ive had before, there wasn’t any ginger n garlic.
