When enough pressure builds up in our pressure cooker, it &quot;whistles&quot;, meaning a loud noise is heard as the pressure is being released.  Although it is not an exact length of time, the number of whistles is used as a gauge.  For example, rice cooks with just one whistle.  Toor daal cooks at 2-3 whistles.
