Masala Rice

We love to call this ‘jhatt-patt’ rice. ‘Jhatt-Patt’ means quick and easy! What a fabulous name for this wonderful makeover for some leftover Rice. It is amazing what a little masala (spices) can do to freshen up the leftovers, give it a facelift and getting a warm welcome to the table. The Channa Masala gives the dish the color, sourness and the flavor but if you don’t have that, substitute with Pav Bhaji Masala or some Sambar Powder so a unique and delicious flavors. This one is another great dish to take for lunches to school or work. So finish off the leftovers and get a great dish out of it, what a brilliant idea!

Cooked Rice (White or Brown) – 3 Cups

Turmeric Powder – 1/4 tsp
Peanuts – 3 tbsp
Curry Leaves – sprig

  1. This looks really yummy! I was reading through your comments and was wondering if you had ever made french toast with yogurt or soy yogurt instead of eggs. It works really good, you thin it out the same as you would an egg and it browns nice too. Maybe it would work for your french toast.
    Thanks for the great videos

I always suspected this, but since my allergic reactions are so bad, never really got down to picking up a box and reading the ingredients. :). thanks for that. you confirmed it.

  6. Hi,

When I first saw this recipe, I thought-oh well, just another boring masala rice.It did not interest me enough even though I have not tried chana masala with rice. Last night I had some leftover rice and thought will give this recipe a try. I tweaked it a little bit and was pleasantly surprised. Great recipe.

  7. Hi Puja,

Chana masala doesn’t really have chana in it. It is a masala used in chole or chana recipes. Be sure to read the ingredients list anyway 🙂 just in case. Basically, you can use any masalas that you have (preferably something tangy). The bottom line being that you want to jazz up the plain rice.

Regarding the French Toast… unfortunately, we do not have a way of making it without the eggs. Sorry.

  8. Hi Hetal and Anuja,

Your recipes are amazing. my friend referred me to this site. i love it. i like the way you give step by step instruction.

one question in this recipe. I am allergic to chana. is there any other masala that i can use?

secondly, i don’t take eggs. do you have any other french toast recipe without the egg?

    Thanks,
    Puja

  10. Hi Hetal and anuja,

I cant thank you enough for all the wonderful recipes you have put up…I have been trying quite a few of them and they have all turned out awesome. My confidence in cooking has gone up and I have to attribute this to both of you. Please keep up this good work.

This recipe is so innovative and a nice way to not use left over rice.

    Thanks again.

  11. Hi Sri,

We’ve never tried this recipe with brown rice, but it should work. The only difference might be the brown rice’s ability to hold all of the masalas. Maybe you could sprinkle some water on the rice before adding the masalas so that they stick. Also, the texture may be different.

  12. Hi Anuja & Hetal,
    Very nice and quick recipe!!!
I am always very inspired by your recipes and tried few as well. They turn out really well and we love it.Can you please also make Vegetable Jaipuri for us? I tried looking for this recipe but I can’t find the one recipe that I can follow.

    Thanks,
    Niki.
