Pedas are a wonderful and delicious mithai (sweets) that are very popular and are often served during Diwali. Traditionally, it is made with milk that is cooked and cooked and cooked…till it thickens. It has a smooth and silky texture and it just melts in the mouth. One Peda will never be enough…so here we have a simplified version that is just as tasty and a lot easier to make. Another interesting fact about Pedas - a lot of people distribute sweets (mithai) anytime there is a baby born….so if it is boy, its Pedas and if it is a girl, it’s usually Burfi. But it doesn’t have to be Diwali or you don’t have a birth in the family to enjoy this mithai…..enjoy them anytime with this quick and easy recipe. Bon Appetite.

Can we do it on stove as well?If so how is the procedure?Whats the texture to take it off the fire?
December 19th, 2007 at 11:20 pm
Hi Anna,
Yes,you can make Pedas on the stove top as well. You need everything to be mixed it well. Make sure you use a heavy-bottomed pan on low to med. heat and keep stirring constantly. You are looking for a very thick consistency kind of like peanut butter.
Happy Cooking!

I made the Pedas for our neighbours for Christmas and they loved it. Also sent the pedas to my daughter’s school when they talked about Diwali. All the children were asking for the recipe. It is so easy to make and tastes sooo good.
Thanks!

Hi Anuja n Hetal,
Thank you for your great video recipes. I tried your peda recipe and they came out well. But I did not get the texture that was shown on the video. I used fat free creamer for this recipe. Is it because of that? Please give me the type N brand u used for this recipe and also for the gulab jamun recipe.
Jaya.

Hi, Thanks for the great recipe .
I tried and it came out well. I just had a problem my peda did not have the same smooth look that urs have.
I kept rolling it in rounds but i got a lot of cracks in them. Any tips on how to get smooth round pedas?
Could u also tell me what power setting of microwave are u using?

Riya,
Both Condensed Milk (comes in a can) and Powder Milk (comes in a box/carton) can be bought at any regular grocery store. Look for Condensed Milk in the baking Aisle and the Powder Milk in the Coffee aisle.

Sri,
That could be one of 3 reasons…
-Added too much Powder Milk (so it dried out)
-Did not clean out the can of condensed milk
-try mixing it really well.
The trick for Pedas (and Gulab Jamuns) is to Oil the palm with just a little bit of Oil. Then take a little bit of batter/dough and make a ball, flatten it and then make it into a ball again…sometimes, that helps smooth out the cracks a lot. Hope it helps.

Sri,
Sorry, forgot to answer the last part of your question…we use the highest setting (10) for all our microwave cooking unless we specify otherwise.

Hi Anuja,
I tried out the recipe and it came out well, but the texture was more white in color. I did not get the brown color. I added exact quantities mentioned in the video. Should i change any of the ingredients content?
Love your show and thanks.

Hi Naveen,
As long as it tasted good, I won’t worry about the color. Sometimes the brand of the butter makes a difference in the color. I would not change anything if I were you. If it did turn out very white and does not look appetizing, then add a couple of drops of food color or crush some saffron, soak it in very little milk and add it to the mixture.
Take care!

Hi guys,
Thanks for all the great, easy recipes. I have recently started cooking on my own and need all the help I can get. This penda recipe is amazing- My husband was so impressed- of course I didn’t tell him how easy it was!

I only have salted butter and it might alter the taste. I have tons of ghee though. Do you think I could use ghee? Thanks
June 7th, 2008 at 9:52 pm
Hi Rach,
We have never tried this specific recipe using ghee but it should work fine. Just melt it so it is not solid.
June 19th, 2008 at 5:58 pm
I have used the peda recipe but used 4oz melted ghee instead and added 2oz of finely ground almond powder. turned out lovely.
June 27th, 2008 at 9:45 pm
Sarmi,
Did you use the almond powder as a substitute for the milk powder or did you also use milk powder.
Thanks,
Sara

July 21st, 2008 at 10:56 pm
Hi Swetha,
You did get the right one, it is granulated and not a smooth powder. Enjoy the pedas!

please microwave settings in watts?
August 3rd, 2008 at 9:38 pm
I made these last night for my husband, but I only had one cup of milk powder. My internet was down, so I couldn’t double check. It turned out a little too sweet and softer than they should have been, but my husband still enjoyed them. The particular taste good with dried coconut or almonds on top.

A great substitute for a stamp is to use a thread spool. Make sure to clean it before gently pressing it on the top of the pedas.

You two are the best! I need to ask a quick question. This Sunday my family and I are having an Aqiqah (celebration for the birth of a baby)and there will be 200 guests attending. Can you tell me how much does this basic recipe yields? And would you be able to advise me on how to prepare enough for so many people? (I want to get this right;)I appreciate your website and feedback.
